Russian Language Literacy Test: Intellectual Flash Mob or Speech Genre?

Abstract: 

The phenomenon of «Total dictation» (the annual educational event of the Russian language literacy testing) is analyzed in the article from the point of view of its communicative and speech genre characteristics: communicative roles, intentions, communicative mode, communicative values, structural and semantic components. «Total dictation» is looked upon as a speech event which contains elements of several communicative spheres – pedagogical, entertaining, virtual discourse, which causes the contradictory nature of this phenomenon, namely, the combination of “serious topics” and a “non-serious form”. The research was carried out on the basis of dictation texts of different years, materials of Internet «Total dictation» discussions, as well as personal participation of the author in this event.
