The transition of locus amoenus into chronotope in high biedermeier lyrics as a sign of the idyll genre (Annette von Droste-Hulshoff)

Abstract:

The aim of the study is to understand the locus amoenus in the poetry of the High Biedermeier era using the material of the German poetess A. Droste-Hulshoff. Locus amoenus is a sentimental corner in a park or a landscaped area of forest, or a home locus (home, “poetic hut”, house in the wilderness). The studied locus is a beautiful, peaceful time-space which consists of elements typical of the locus amoenus, capturing ancient (love encounters) and sentimental elements, as well as responding to romantic ones (place of creativity). The research method is structural and descriptive. In most cases, Droste-Hulshoff uses a pond as a body of water. The locus amoenus of the German poetess depicts landscaped, sometimes man-made nature (a park, a well-kept pond). The author uses near (a tree shadow, flowers) and distant (hills, shepherds) plans. In the case of expansion of locus amoenus to the entire artistic text, the transition of the locus to the chronotope, the poem is either a pure idyll or the leadership of the idyll in genre diffusion. Multiplying idyllic motifs, spreading to the entire text, locus amoenus loses the properties of the locus. Its expansion provides an optimistic ending to the lyrical plot, which strengthens the genre status of the poem as an idyll. In such poems, the idyll wins over both the opposing genres (elegy, ballad, etc.), neutralizing their constants and dominants, and the genres related to it in positive content – a poetic prayer, ode, hymn, friendly message, romantic passage, feeding on their dominants.
