Abstract:

This paper presents the proposition that a speech genre as a relatively stable form of mental activity implemented in the text can be considered an object of cognitive modeling. The article contains a review of discourse concepts used in the computer text analysis. For the latter, we show the applicability of the main propositions of functional stylistics that studies the text organization of a certain sphere of communication under the influence of extra-linguistic factors (primarily the type of activity and form of consciousness) and explores the content-semantic and linguistic planes of a text in their unity. The basic for this area of research category of speech system is extends to the genre level of abstraction. Communicative-grammatical and functional-stylistic approaches to the description of speech system are characterized comparatively. It is concluded that these approaches are complementary. In this paper, we demonstrate the analysis of one of the genres of academic communication – a report on the empirical regularity of cause-and-effect type. Its semantic structure is described as a set of mental operations united by a common goal. It is argued that speech embodiment of mental operations is characterized by a set of lexical, morphological and syntactic-semantic features that can be formalized and aggregated by means of heterogeneous semantic networks built in accordance with the relational-situational text model and supplemented with nodes and links reflecting the syntactic structure of sentences. The research successfully solves the problem of identifying typical mental operations that constitute a text genre form.
