About “genres of speech and language of speech” again: what has linguistics given to genre studies?

This is the second article in a cycle on the connection between genre studies and linguistics. The previous article discussed the question “What have genre studies given to linguistics?” This article focuses on linguistic methods used in speech genres theory: more traditional for linguistics, starting with the descriptive method and its later varieties – structural – and less traditional (component analysis, the method of immediate constituents, the generative method, the method of describing external and deep content structures, the method of semantic fields).

From the mastery of a speech genre researcher to discoveries in text linguistics (Book Review: Turaeva Z. Ya. From the writer's mastery to the reader's discoveries: In search of the essence of the text. Moscow: LENAND, 2016. 144 p.)

This review presents a new book on the fundamental categories of «text» and «culture» as they emerge among the research priorities of humanities and linguistics in the beginning of the 21st century. Authored by Z. Ya. Turaeva, this book discusses a wide scope of problems that were in the focus of linguistic research at the turn of the millennium. These problems range from text models to linguistic demagogy and linguistics of lies. from the text addressee and ethno-psychological features of addressing the text to intertextuality.

What Have Genre Studies Given to Modern Linguistics?

The article summarizes the preliminary results of the interaction of genre studies and linguistics of the last three decades. The significance of genre studies for linguistics is determined by the fact that the speech genres themselves are of exceptional importance for the language – the object of linguistics: not equal to the language completely, speech genres are a phenomenon without which it is impossible to truly comprehend the structure, functioning, and history of the language.

Speech genre theory through the prism of modern linguistics

The article deals with the status of the speech genres theory (SGT) and its contribution to the development of modern linguistics. In his polemical article Professor V. V. Dementyev argues that SGT is characterized by the wide range of research problems, a close connection with such academic domains as the theory of speech acts, colloquial studies, discourse analysis, linguistic personology and other areas that study a human and their language.
